Pioneer Rails Base Game
Players: 1–80 • Ages: 10+ • Play time: 45 min.
You’ll compete against other railroad owners to plan your railway in the best way possible to connect establishments to the railroad and satisfy the demands of the locals.
In this flip-and-write game, you use poker cards to extend your railway tracks and build a poker hand at the same time. Each turn, you choose one of the revealed poker cards. The suit of the card helps you extend your railway, connecting you to new towns and surrounding features. When you connect to a town, you gain the ability to do a one-time bonus. When you surround a feature with your tracks, you activate it for endgame scoring. The value of the card is added to your poker hand, for which you’ll score additional points at the end of the round.
Three common goals are also in play each game, giving you incentives to build in different directions. The mechanism of surrounding features to activate them gives Pioneer Rails a satisfying puzzly feel to the game.
Pioneer Rails Deck of Cards
This is a Wild West–themed deck of poker cards. When laid out in numerical order, each suit shows a different Wild West story.
Ultimatch
Players: 1–5 • Ages: 10+ • Play time: 20 min.
Make clever matches by number or color. Will you use 1 card or 2? Addition or subtraction? Mix colors (yellow + blue = green)? Will you risk a card now or save it for later? Can you guess what card the other player needs? Make a perfect match of both number and color to feel the thrill and gain the rewards of an Ultimatch!
Endangered: American Red Wolf Scenario
The march of humankind’s progress threatens the survival of the American red wolf. It’s up to you and your team to save them! Work with your fellow conservationists to save American red wolves, challenging negative stereotypes and gaining the support of landowners.
Historically, thousands of American red wolves were found throughout the southeastern United States. Today, only a small population exists in the wilds of North Carolina, making them the most endangered wolf in the world. Their fragile population has grown through a carefully managed breeding program. In 1987, they were reintroduced in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. As of 2023, red wolves are still released there, though their population area now expands outside the refuge. Because a large portion of their recovery area encompasses privately owned land, local support is critical for coexistence.
La Familia Hort
Players: 2–4 • Ages: 14+ • Play time: 40 min.
Granny Hortensia, owner of the lands of an eccentric farmer’s family, dies one day without leaving a will. One night, the moon turns reddish, and the grandmother reappears as a ghost to put her four grandchildren to the test. She will visit them three times, always coinciding with the red moon. After her three appearances, whoever has become the most experienced farmer will inherit all her land.
Money, water, and fertilizer management is the key to winning La Familia Hort, with your goal being to have the most experience points after Granny Hortensia’s three visits. The game is played in rounds, and each round has five steps determined by the active round card: Market, Purchase, Fertilizer, Watering, or Sale. The game goes on through rounds until the third red moon round card appears, and consequently, Granny Hortensia makes her third visit.
